Gimont is a bastide town, founded in 1265 by the friars of the Planselve abbatial church. The town's characteristic layout of streets cut at right angles is well suited to the topography of the steep hill on which it is built. The main street follows the ridge and runs directly under the 14th century market hall. Gimont hosts a superb duck market, one of the largest in the Gers, every Sunday during production season (winter).
