Lisle-sur-Tarn, with its streets cut at right angles, is a typical Occitanie bastide town. It was founded in 1229. Built on the banks of the River Tarn, it became an island when a moat was dug out all around for protection. Hence its name.
Halfway between Albi and Gaillac, the town is remarkable for its very large covered square, adorned with a fountain and old brick and wood houses, some of which are linked to their outbuildings by “pountets” (small covered bridges) that span the narrow streets.
