At the foot of the Montagne Noire mountain range, Mazamet is a wealthy town bursting with 19th-century bourgeois mansions. One of them is home to the Museum of Catharism. Mazamet, like the nearby perched village of Hautpoul, was a stronghold of this religious movement.
Catharism spread throughout Occitanie during the 12th century, from Albi to Montségur, via Toulouse, as a reaction against the excessive wealth of the Catholic church.
Before you rush to walk across the Mazamet footbridge, 70 meters over the Arnette gorges, we suggest you discover the town's highlights.
