Tarascon is THE place to be in the Pyrenees for potholing and prehistory. Located at the confluence of the Ariège and Vicdessos rivers, the small town is encircled by some fifty caves, a dozen of which feature splendid prehistoric paintings.
Tarascon also attracts a large number of canoeists who set off upstream to paddle down the Ariège to enjoy the river's pristine natural environment.
