Villefranche-de-Rouergue is a magnificent example of medieval town planning, with the invention of bastide towns. Its dense network of carefully ordered streets leads to the main square. The square is enclosed by arcades surmounted by Gothic and Renaissance mansions.
Here, the triumphant Notre-Dame collegial church stands tall, keeping watch over a town that puts a premium on gastronomy and local products.
A bastide town founded in 1252 by King Saint Louis, Villefrance-de-Rouergue has a few surprises in store for visitors, such as a collection dedicated to jazz (the 2nd largest in France!).
