The Maquis of Meilhan is the fact of arms of the Second World War the best known of the Department of Gers. It is also the most tragic.
It was July 7, 1944 in the early morning, following a heroic and tragic battle of the maquis of Meilhan against an enemy superior in number or some 1200 German. Surrounded on three sides and taken under the fire of the enemy, the leader of the maquis Dr. Raynaud and Commander Marcelin succumb with the other guerrillas mostly massacred.
The Maquis of Meilhan is a place of memory, a site and memorial erected in memory of 67 maquisards, inaugurated in 1949. Since then, every first Sunday of July, the Gersois gather themselves numerous and silent on the site.
