Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a medieval town proudly overlooking the Vère valley. Seen from the inside, the village, listed as one of the most beautiful in France, justifies this impression of an impregnable fortress. The typical charm of its facades, its arcaded square and its pillory bear witness to a history and heritage that are still very much present. But that’s not all: nature-lovers can also discover magnificent trails and viewpoints over the nearby Grésigne forest. Once an observation post and impregnable fortress, Castelnau is now a haven of peace, with its charming central square closed to cars. A jewel of the Middle Ages, the town is home to the church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption and its treasure trove of religious silverware: the reliquary cross of the Counts of Armagnac. A monument in its own right, this object has played such an important civil and religious role in the life of the town. Are you ready to travel back in time?
